County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer announced last week that the county could obtain herd immunity among adults and the oldest teenagers as soon as July, it marked an incredible milestone for a region once positioned as an epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic.But the remarks also raised questions about what role, if any, young people will play in achieving that goal. The number of coronavirus vaccines administered in San Bernardino County increased day over day, according to data released Friday, May 14.There were 23,644 additional vaccine doses given as of Thursday, May 13 as compared to the day before, the latest dates for which vaccine numbers are available. On May 7, the county reported giving 13,797 doses as compared to the day before.On Thursday, the county began to vaccinate 12- to 15-year-olds for the first time and administered nearly 1,000 doses to children this age, the county reported on Friday.At county vaccination sites, 544 vaccines were administered to children ages 12-15 on Thursday, said Felisa Cardona, spokesperson for the county health department. Another 404 booked appointments on Friday, she said. She expected the number of children who received a dose will be higher because this doesn’t include pharmacy and medical sites. Complete numbers will be available on Monday, she said.Doses administered in the past seven days were reported at 71,901 on Wednesday, the lowest weekly total since mid-April, when statewide numbers became available. The number of COVID-positive hospitalizations in Riverside County dropped below 60, and no additional virus-related deaths were reported Monday.According to the Riverside University Health System, 54 people countywide are hospitalized with COVID-19, compared to 66 on Friday, and that includes 14 intensive care unit patients, one less than the end of last week.No data was reported over the weekend.RUHS said the aggregate number of COVID cases recorded since the public health documentation period began in March 2020 is 299,853, up 288 from Friday.A total 4,593 deaths from virus-related complications have been recorded in the last 13 months, unchanged from the end of last week.The number of known active virus cases countywide is 1,246, a drop of 149 from Friday. The active count is derived by subtracting deaths and recoveries from the current total — 299,853 — according to the county Executive Office. San Bernardino County has administered about half the number of COVID-19 vaccines in a single day earlier this week compared to one week ago, according to state data reported Wednesday, May 12.The number of doses increased by 8,912 on Tuesday, May 11, the latest day for which vaccine numbers are available, as compared to doses given on Monday, May 10. One week ago, on May 5, the county gave 16,528 doses that day compared to the day before.Doses administered in the past seven days were reported at 77,317 on Tuesday, the lowest weekly total since mid-April, when statewide numbers became available.The county is behind statewide vaccination rates, data shows. Out of San Bernardino County’s population of all ages, 26.1% are fully vaccinated, below the statewide figure of 35.9%, according to state data. The percent of the county’s total population with at least one dose is 34.8%, compared to 48.4% statewide.San Bernardino County’s vaccination coverage is below that in Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties, state data shows.On Wednesday, the county reported an average of 75 coronavirus cases in the past week, a number that has remained nearly the same since early May.
